Needle ray gun kills tumours
1 What is the major advantage of the small X-ray needle gun, over the more conventional X-ray treatments of cancer?
2 X-rays for this treatment have wavelengths of about 10 -11 m. Calculate the energy of an X-ray photon [h = 6.6x10 -34 Js, c = 3x10 8 ms -1 ].
3 Explain how an electron beam produces X-rays when hitting a gold target.
4 Estimate the p.d. through which the electrons have to be accelerated to produce these X-rays. [Charge on electron = 1.6x10 -19 C, mass of
electron = 9.1x10 -31 kg.]
